Custom Cut Ceramic Glass
At Total-Hearth.com, we specialize in high-temperature ceramic glass for wood stoves, pellet stoves, coal stoves, and many high-heat fireplace applications. If you know your stove brand and model, great—if not, no problem. Measure your existing glass and order using those measurements.
Why Use Ceramic Glass for Fireplace Doors?
Ceramic glass isn’t ordinary glass—it’s a transparent ceramic designed for extreme heat and thermal shock. It’s commonly known by these brand names:
Ceramic glass is ideal for high-heat appliances such as:
- Wood stoves
- Pellet stoves
- Coal stoves
- Gas and oil appliances (where ceramic is specified)
- Bio-fuel appliances
Note: Ceramic glass is not suitable for cooktops or rangetops.
Thickness Options
- 3/16" (most common)
- 1/8" (for certain applications)
Our ceramic glass has a slight amber tint that is considered “clear.”
Custom Tempered Glass Cutting
We also provide custom-cut tempered glass for appropriate low-to-moderate heat applications (such as fireplace doors/screens and various projects) where tempered glass is the correct specification.
Important Tempered Glass Safety Notes
- Never use tempered glass in an airtight wood stove. The heat can exceed its limits and cause failure.
- Processing time: Tempered glass typically takes 7–10 business days.
- Final sale: Tempered glass cannot be re-cut after tempering—please verify measurements carefully.
Quick Comparison: Ceramic vs Tempered
| Type | Max Heat (Typical) | Thickness Options | Lead Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic (Pyroceram / Neoceram / Robax) | Up to ~1470°F (application dependent) | 1/8" or 3/16" | Often same or next business day | Slight amber tint; high thermal shock resistance |
| Tempered | Up to ~470°F (application dependent) | Varies | 7–10 business days | Final sale; cannot be re-cut; not for airtight wood stoves |

Measuring & Installation Tips
- Leave clearance for expansion: Ceramic glass should be at least 1/8" shy of the mounting surface (3/16" is common).
- Double-check measurements: If the old glass is intact, you can use it for reference, but verify against the mounting surface.
- Do not over-tighten hardware: Screws and metal frames expand with heat and can crack the glass.

How to Measure for Custom-Sized Fireplace Glass
Getting the perfect fit for your custom glass is essential. Follow these simple steps to ensure your measurements are accurate.
Step 1: Prepare the Area Make sure your fireplace or stove is completely cool. If there is old glass, carefully remove it and clean the frame or opening where the new glass will sit. Remove any old gasket material or sealant for a clean surface.
Step 2: Measure the Opening, Not the Old Glass Do not measure your old piece of glass, as it may have warped from heat over time. Use a quality tape measure to get the dimensions of the opening itself.
Step 3: Measure Height and Width Measure the width of the opening at both the top and bottom, and the height at both the left and right sides. Use the smaller of the two measurements for both width and height to ensure the glass will fit. Measure to the nearest 1/16th of an inch.
Step 4: Allow for Expansion To prevent the glass from cracking under heat, it needs room to expand. Subtract 1/8" (or 2mm) from both your final height and width measurements. This small gap is the most important step for a long-lasting fit.
